“THE PALE BLUE EYE”, A THRILLER IN THE WORLD OF MELANCHOLY



A GOTHIC DETECTIVE STORY

Based on the 2003 novel of the same name by American author Louis BayardThe Pale Blue Eye has been released on Netflix. Starring in this gothic-thriller written and directed by Scott CooperOscar and Golden Globe Award-winning British actor Christian Bale, known for his versatility in the productions he starred in and using method acting techniques on the set, and Harry Melling, the shining star of Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter films. In the film, where we travel to the America of the 1830s, where a series of serial murders were committed, an experienced detective investigating a haunting and terrifying mystery and the young cadet character who helps him greet the audience. We learn that this young student is Edgar Allen Poe, an American poet and writer known as the pioneer of Gothic literature in classical world literature. In addition, Poe is considered to be the author of the first detective story in history with his 1841 The Murders in the Rue Morgue. Although the story told is fictional, Edgar Allen Poe enlisted in the army in 1827 under the pseudonym Edgar A. Perry to make a living. The story of the movie is inspired by the famous short story The Tell-Tale Heart written by E. A. Poe, and also the name of the movie comes from this story. Although it is all set in the USA and the characters are American, the majority of the cast is British. German cultural critic, film theorist and philosopher Siegfried Kracauer, one of the three theorists of modernity at the beginning of the 20th century (along with Georg Simmel and Walter Benjamin), in his philosophical review book called The Detective Novel; He states that the environment in which the detective novel takes place consists of many social layers and that in terms of the reality it contains, human beings are below the others in the stages of existence. In The Pale Blue Eye, we see the social layers and existence steps that Kracauer talks about through the depth of the characters. German philosopher Walter Benjamin, who laid the foundation of ‘critical theory’ with the founders of the Frankfurt School, for detective novel in his work ‘One Way Street’: “19. The only source that satisfactorily describes and simultaneously analyzes the furniture style of the second half of the century is a certain kind of detective novel in which the horrors of the home are located in the centers of power. It is the layout of the items as well as the setting up of the death traps, and the successive rooms instruct the victim which way to escape.” he emphasizes the importance of the motifs exhibited in the story. We see that Henri Le Clerc‘s book Discours du Diable, which is also shown in the movie, and its lost copies have an important place.

TOPIC OF THE FILM

Veteran detective Augustus Landor is hired to investigate the murder at the West Point military school. He enlists a clever West Point student to help him solve this gruesome murder at the Military Academy. This soldier is the young man the world will know as Edgar Allan Poe.
