“PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH” A MAGICAL FAIRY TALE FROM DREAMWORKS

A FASCINATING ADVENTURE

Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation‘s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish took its place in the vision as a spin-off adaptation of the Shrek series as a sequel to 2011’s Puss in Boots. Nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 80th Golden Globe Awards, this production is the first DreamWorks Animation film produced using the PipeX assembly system. Nominated for the Best Animated Feature Film at the 76th BAFTA Awards, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is one of the favorite animations of the award season. Using new technology, the production team focused on a more painterly design to make the movie look like a fairy tale world, and as the inspiration for the animation style of the movie; It utilized a visual style similar to storybook illustrations, as in Akira (1988) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). The animation was directed by director Joel Crawford and assistant director Januel Mercado, with music by Grammy-winning Brazilian composer Heitor Pereira. Puss in Boots is actually a common Italian fairy tale in European history. Although according to some interpretations, the main source of the story is Ancient Egypt, the oldest written source in Europe is The Facetious Nights of Straparola (XIV-XV), which belongs to the Italian fairy tale collector Giovanni Francesco Straparola. The iconic Puss in Boots character, which has inspired composers, choreographers, and other artists for centuries, is an example of the type of Human Formalism known as Anthropomorphism, the attribution of human qualities to another being.

TOPIC OF THE ANIMATION

Discovering that his passion for adventure and danger has paid a heavy price, Puss in Boots has used eight of his nine lives. Embarking on her greatest adventure yet to get their souls back, our hero embarks on an epic adventure to the Black Forest to find the legendary Wishing Star and reclaim his lost souls

Stars; Antonio Banderas (Voice), Salma Hayek (Voice), Harvey Guillén (Voice), Florence Pugh (Voice), Olivia Colman (Voice), Ray Winstone (Voice), Samson Kayo (Voice), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Voice), John Mulaney (Voice) and Wagner Moura (Voice).

MORPHOLOGY OF THE FOLKTALE

In the story, we see that Puss in Boots is accompanied by two supporting characters, Kitty Softpaws and Perrito. A literary scholar, linguist, and fairy tale scientist, Vladimir Propp, who made a significant contribution to the analysis methods in the fields of ethnology, folklore, and semiotics with the analysis technique he applied to the fairy tales, examines all the fairy tales in the world in depth in his work called “Morphology of the Folktale” and the common 31 functions of all of them, namely the point. indicates that. Here, he talks about the animals that come into the service of the hero and become his assistants and states that they reappear as a helper in a dangerous moment. Puss in Boots understands the importance of virtue and moral principles through the exams he gives on his adventurous journey. Lithuanian scientist A. J. Greimas, who is considered an important turning point in the history of linguistics and in the field of text analysis, reclassifies the functions identified by Propp, resystematizes them according to his semiotic point of view, and divides them into three tests. It is observed that the story told in the movie is in accordance with Greimas’s 3-stage (Restorative, Conclusive and Honorable Testing) scheme, as in Propp. In this adventure, we see that Puss in Boots gains positive behaviors and internalizes them. These human behaviors shown by the main character are one of the characteristics of the Fable genre, which aims to teach the protagonists by generally carrying human characteristics. The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who pioneered Western philosophy and its intellectual history, has had a tremendous impact on the history of world philosophy. His work, On the Genealogy of Morality, is considered one of the most important works of modern European culture. In his book, “All instincts that cannot be emptied out turn inward, this is what I call the internalization of man.” He states that man was the first being to develop what was later called the ‘soul’. The Puss in Boots character, just as Nietzsche mentioned, internalizes his instincts like humans and shows that he harbors the soul, which is (in Nietzsche’s terms) the essence of human existence.

ETERNAL RECURRENCE

Another important detail in the story is that Puss in Boots actually goes into a kind of loop as he tries to get back the lives he lost. This brings us to Nietzsche’s Thesis of Eternal Recurrence, which is the main theme of Thus Spoke Zarathustra. In this view, Nietzsche; proposes the thesis that time is in a cyclical form and that events are repeated forever in this circularity and will be repeated for eternity. Seeing this cycle as the heaviest burden of coping with pain, Nietzsche describes it as one of the conditions necessary for a person to reach the level of an Übermensch, that is, the Superhuman. This cycle also evokes the concept of the “Eternal Return” Myth. Romanian philosopher and historian Mircea Eliade, professor of the history of religions at the University of Chicago, is considered one of the most important academics in the history of religions, with more than 50 published works. This concept is a belief expressed through behavior that the events described in myths can take place or return to the modern form as long as the “Mythical Age” takes place. In addition; In the Rebirth Archetype of Carl Gustav Jung, the founder of analytical psychology and one of the three great founders of depth psychology, we see that with the transformation of the person, the inner structure changes, identifies with a group, and resembles the cult hero. Just like in this animation.

PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH

At the center of the story; We see it as a high-paced action where all the characters are after the big fairy tale prize. The filmmakers note that Sergio Leone‘s classic Western film “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” (1966) was instrumental in this animation. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, in the genre of action, adventure, and comedy, is an impressive animation that will take you on a fascinating and unique adventure.
