GREAT EXPECTATIONS, A CHARLES DICKENS CLASSIC FROM STEVEN KNIGHT

A DRAMATIC PRODUCTION

Produced by BBC Studios, FX Productions, Scott Free Productions, and Hardy, Son & BakerGreat Expectations is based on the classic novel of the same name by Charles Dickens, widely regarded as the greatest writer of the Victorian Age. Starring Oscar-winning British actress Olivia Colman and Fionn Whitehead, the production was written by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Steven Knight, author of acclaimed titles such as TabooEastern Promises, Peaky Blinders, and Spencer, and directed by Brady Hood and Samira Radsi. This production story which is a Bildungsroman is a literary genre that focuses on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist from childhood to adulthood and centers on an orphan named Pip. Dickens’s themes include wealth and poverty, love and rejection, the world of bourgeois values, and the final victory of good over evil. However, in this book, which is among Dickens’s maturity period novels, the author does not give any place to sentimentality or humor, which are known as the main features of his works.

A UNIVERSE IN RISE OF DEGENERATION

Turkish writer, philologist, and translator, a professor of English literature, Mîna Urgan, after giving lectures on English literature for nearly forty years, writes the History of English Literature. In the book of Mîna Urgan; “Although social problems are not given as much coverage in Great Expectations as in Dickens’ other novels. However, the transformation that Pip underwent after he became a well-educated gentleman with money and stamps shows that class change is also a social problem.” she states that Great Expectations touches upon sociological issues and attaches importance to social problems of a universal nature. This new adaptation of Steven Knight; draws a universe in which the slave trade, drug addiction, and corruption are on the rise. This production, which looks at the inner worlds of the characters from a socio-psychological and social point of view, draws attention to the gap between the proletariat, that is, the working class and the bourgeois-noble class.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

E. M. Forster, an English novelist, short story, and essayist, is considered one of the leading influential writers of twentieth-century English literature. The author’s book Aspects of the Novel is one of the cornerstones of Anglo-American novel criticism. Forster states that almost all of Dickens’ characters are simple, that is, superficial, and the character of Pip is more like a bubble of water than a human of flesh and blood, who, despite trying to be dexterous, works with great shyness. And he also states that although the character is one-sided, it still evokes a great sense of depth in the reader. In the series, the sense of depth that Forster talked about is reflected to the audience, and the audience inevitably establishes a deep connection with Pip’s dramatic character. Filmed in England, HampshireLondon, and Great George StreetGreat Expectations is an impressive production that will be enjoyed by lovers of classical and historical productions. Especially the atmosphere of Steven Knight’s dark, gloomy, and brutal world (like in Peaky Blinders), this “Reboot” Great Expectations brings a different and unusual interpretation.
