PRODUCTION DESIGN

Horvath and Jelenic have a long history of working together. But Super Mario Bros. Movie is their first time co-directing a movie. Director Jelenic; “Teen Titans Go! We wrote and directed To the Movies, and this is our first time directing together. This is a new role for me because I’m from a writing background. So this movie gave us the opportunity for a new working relationship. Normally we produce stories and create different themes and characters. Now we’re looking at the bigger picture. Even though we have a history of working together in a certain way, it was like getting to know each other again in a way for us. We’re also from TV backgrounds and on TV you write the script and you do what’s on the page. When you entered the world of cinema, we learned that although you had a very good script when you started, the film will change a lot during the production process. It has been a fun experience for us to work with Matt [Fogel] for the various iterations for this movie. We’ve made this movie many times and it’s always been the best movie. But we always said, ‘We can do better.’ That is the nature of the motion picture. You always turn good ideas into better ideas.” he says. In the reshaping process, the directors created the theme they wanted to emphasize. Horvath: “The main theme of this movie is perseverance. Never give up. The only way to lose the Super Mario Brothers game is to give up and if you keep playing you will get better and eventually beat Bowser. So that was the theme of the movie.” says the director.

MUSIC

For the soundtrack of the Super Mario Brothers Movie, the producers consulted Fast & Furious 9, Transformers: Prime, Eagle Eye, The Expendables trilogy, Iron Man 3Oscar nomine master composer Danny Elfman. And also They consulted with renowned American composer Brian Tyler, who has composed music for over 100 films, including Avengers Age of Ultron, Gang of Wizards and Crazy Rich Asians. Tyler’s love of Nintendo games and his background in video game soundtracks made him perfect for the task. He says: “Over the years, when I played Mario, I always thought about what it would be like to really jump into that world, and this movie makes that dream come true in the best way possible. The care taken by everyone in this movie is truly unmatched. We’ve all taken great care so that this vision is a tribute to Mario’s personal importance to each of us. That’s why I gave myself completely to this movie. I wanted this idea to become a reality for everyone who watched this movie.” Like many classical films, a large orchestra is at the center of the soundtrack. This gave Tyler the ability to move larger for action scenes and smaller for close-ups, while capitalizing on the many 8-bit sounds used in the original Mario games. Tyler explains: “E.T. An example of how classical music can tell the story of a movie with highly identifiable themes is a movie that comes to mind. The music of the two brothers, the villains, the romance, the humor, the magic, the action brought an orchestral element with it.”

MMAIN MUSIC

Nintendo composer Koji Kondo composed the main music for Super Mario Brothers in 1985. It has since become iconic in popular culture. Tyler says: “I know Mario’s music very well and I feel nostalgic for all the music Koji Kondo has made for the games. It was a pleasure to not only make new music to represent Mario in this movie, but also combine them with the music Koji Kondo made for the games. For this film, I made a symbolic soundtrack with an emotional depth that still represents the music of the games from the beginning.” On top of Tyler’s and Kondo’s music, the producers also turned to nostalgia. Jelenic says: “We found music from the 80s that made us feel a certain way and took us and the parents who brought their kids to this movie back to when we played as kids. It adds a very distinct feeling to the mood of the movie. It’s kind of sarcastic and it shows people that we’re not taking this movie too seriously because in the end it’s a fun journey.” Tyler has developed a strong relationship with Kondo and producer Shigeru Miyamoto. This allowed him to create a new page in Mario music while preserving the original music in the structure of the film. This collaboration between the two directors and three studios has created an excellent process for Tyler. Horvath says: “The original music succeeds beautifully and thoughtfully across all Nintendo music. Sometimes it’s a few notes, a few parts, and sometimes the whole song, but it’s played and sung by some of the most talented musicians in the movie. For me as a fan, it was very satisfying to listen to it.” Tyler adds: “From the amazing directors Aaron and Michael to our amazing friends in Japan who started this venture, Shigeru Miyamoto and Koji Kondo, to Universal’s amazing music department and Illumination’s amazing leader Chris Meledandri, everyone was working towards one goal: Mario. To make an amazing movie that will bring joy and provide an unforgettable experience for eternal fans and new fans. I am very proud to be a part of this movie.”
