THE SANDMAN AND THE UNIVERSE OF
MYTHOLOGY
In the
series, which makes numerous references from literature to history and
mythology, the character Morpheus consults three witches to find their
belongings after escaping from Alex
Burgess. In literature, these are the trio of witches in William Shakespeare's Macbeth. Also in Greek mythology, in the
underworld Tartarus, the servants of
Hades (daughters of Gaia and Uranus) Three sisters-Furies,
the Goddesses of Hell; symbolizes Mégère, Tisiphone, Alecto. Another mythological reference is
made through the character of Gault. Publius Ovidius Naso
(Ovide), considered
one of the three greatest poets of Latin literature, deals with Morpheus, who
is known as the God of Dreams in Greek mythology, in his work The Metamorphoses. Ovid describes Morpheus in his book
as a god with wings. In the science fiction movie The Matrix made in 1999, the character of Morpheus woke up the
character named Neo from the dream and made him enter the world of reality and
see the truth. Returning
to the series, the character of Gault,
who is a nightmare, takes the form of a dream after her transformation. Lord Dream accepts reality and frees
Gault, who is now a dream, by giving him wings. It also symbolizes waking up from a dream and
returning to reality. In
addition, the constant presence of the raven next to the Morpheus character is
a homage to the classic poem The Raven,
known for its supernatural atmosphere, of the American writer Edgar Allan Poe, who is known as the
father of Gothic literature.
