MICKEY 17
Premiered at the 75th Berlin
International Film Festival on February 15, 2025, Warner Bros. Pictures movie
Mickey 17 is Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho's first movie after Parasite
(2019). Adapted from Edward Ashton's novel Mickey 7, this production, although
it is science fiction, falls into the category of satire or sarcastic. Due to
the adverse conditions he finds himself in, the Mickey character takes a job as
an "Expendable" employee of the expedition team sent to colonize the
ice planet Niflheim. In Niflheim, where the atmosphere is unsuitable for humans
and there is a food shortage; Mickey, who is sent on dangerous missions, is
revived as a clone with a new body, preserving his memory every time he dies.
Stars; Robert
Pattinson (“The Batman,” “Tenet”), Naomi Ackie (“Star Wars: Episode IX – The
Rise of Skywalker”), Steven Yeun (“Nope”), with Academy Award nominees Toni
Collette (“Hereditary”), and Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”).
UNIVERSE OF COMMODITIES
In the film, with the
character of Mickey, who dies every time to save humanity, the system is
criticized by underlining the concepts of exploited working class and
mechanization, touching on a kind of capitalism and exploitation theory. Karl
Marx, in his popular analysis of the universe of commodities, talks about
relations between people appearing in the guise of relations between objects.
Just like we see in the movie. Another striking point emerges through the
character of Mickey's employer, Kenneth Marshall. The "Master-Slave"
dialectic of the German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, who is
considered one of the founding figures of modern Western philosophy and among
the important thinkers of German Idealism, is seen.
MYSTERIOUS LAYERS OF THE FILM
Director Bong Joon-ho is known
for layering his films with hidden meanings, and the master filmmaker shows the
same feature again in this film. In a
very short time, one of the digital monitors inside the cloning facility
briefly displays a mysterious sentence: "MICKEY 1 WAS NEVER FOUND."
The question of whether the first Mickey really went missing, as this words
shows, or whether this sentence is a sign of a darker background story and a
subtle hint of a deeper mystery in the Mickey 17 universe, is a matter of deep
curiosity debated by fans of the movie.
BEHIND THE SCENES
-Sean Bean was originally
considered for the role of Mickey before it was given to Robert Pattinson.
-While it's well known that
Pattinson plays multiple versions of Mickey due to the cloning process, what
many don't realise is that director Bong Joon-ho insisted on filming certain
key scenes without Pattinson knowing which version of Mickey he was playing
until just before shooting. This method was meant to capture the confusion and
existential dread of a clone struggling with his own identity, leading to some
of the film's most unsettling and raw performances.
-The Trailer for Mickey17 was
directed by Marios Hamboulides, ahead of the films release.
