Erich Maria Remarque‘ın aynı adlı klasik romanından uyarlanan Batı Cephesinde Yeni Bir Şey Yok, 95. Akademi Ödülleri’nde 9 dalda Oscar adaylığı ve 76. BAFTA Ödülleri’ne 14 dalda adaylığıyla yılın öne çıkan yapımlarının başında geliyor. 2011 yılında The King’s Speech filminin 11 BAFTA adaylığı rekorunu geçen film, 80. Altın Küre Ödülleri’ne de Yabancı Dilde En İyi Film dalında aday oldu. Lewis Milestone‘un 1930 versiyonu ve Delbert Mann‘ın 1979 uyarlamasından sonra bu defa Edward Berger’in yönettiği aynı hikayenin üçüncü yorumu olan bu yapım, Netflix tarihindeki bugüne kadar ki en pahalı Alman filmi. Yazar Erich Maria Remarque‘ın kitabı, I. Dünya Savaşı‘nda bir Alman askeri olarak kendi deneyimlerinden esinlenmiştir. Savaştaki dehşeti ve askerlerin savaş sırasında ve hatta sonrasında baş ettikleri zorlukları gerçekçi bir şekilde tasvir etmesiyle öne çıkar. Klasik dünya edebiyatının dev kalemi Victor Hugo başyapıtı Sefiller‘de, ‘’Waterloo Savaşını’’ tanrının gözünden betimler. Edebiyatta Gerçekçilik yani Realizm akımının öncüsü Stendhal, Parma Manastırı adlı destansı eserinde hikayeyi savaşın içinde yer alan ve neler olduğunu anlamayan Fabrizio Del Dongo adlı karakterin bakış açısından anlatır. Olağanüstü görsel atmosferi ve büyüleyici sinematografisiyle izleyicinin başını döndüren bu filmde de, yönetmenin gerilimi kat be kat arttırmak için olayı tüm çıplaklığıyla savaşın tam kalbinden izleyiciye yansıttığını görüyoruz. Savaşın Almanya cephesinden aktarıldığı filmde, özellikle edebiyattaki anlatım ustalarının büyüleyici bakış açılarının harmanlandığı ve keskin gözlem güçlerinin etkileri görülüyor. Ayrıca yönetmen savaşın sebep olduğu yaşam boyu sürecek travmaları, harp içerisinde yer almak zorunda kalan askerlerin gözünden seyirciye sunuyor ve bunu adeta izleyiciye an be an yaşatıyor. Yaşamı savaş ortamlarında ve askeri akademilerde geçen Napolyon döneminin en önemli askerî teorisyenlerinden Prusyalı General Carl Von Calusewitz, savaş stratejisi üzerine fikirleri ve çalışmaları; Karl Marx, Mao Zedong ve Helmuth Karl Bernhard von Moltke gibi farklı siyasal ve sosyal görüşlerdeki isimler tarafından benimsenmiştir. Savaşı hem iç dinamikleri hem de bir politika aracı olarak anlamak için Batı tarihindeki en önemli girişim olarak gösterilen ’’Savaş Üzerine’’ adlı klasik yapıtında, aslında savaşın özünde ritüelleşmiş bir ikili mücadele olduğunu ve başka araçlarla yapılan bir politika olduğunu vurgular. Araç olarak kast ettiği şey aslında siyasi zemindir. Filmde de tıpkı Calusewitz’in bahsettiği gibi; aslında erlerin yaşamlarını tehlikeye atan sadece birer piyon olduğu, asıl savaşın ülkeler arasında gerçekleştiği (özellikle delegeler arasındaki antlaşma sahnelerinde) gösteriliyor.

 THE SOUL OF AN ERA

The first solo screenplay and ninth film by Oscar-nominated British film and theater director Sam Mendes, Empire of Light tells the story of a romantic drama set in England (South Coast) in the 1980s. Lead actress Olivia Colman was nominated for Best Actress – Drama for this film at the 80th Golden Globe Awards, and the film was also nominated for an Oscar Award for Best Cinematography at the 95th Academy Awards. The subtext of the film, which was nominated for 3 BAFTA’s at the 76th British Academy Film Awards, includes the issues of Racial Discrimination and Sexual Abuse. Production Designer Mark Tildesley explains that the main characters are worn and broken people and need care, healing, and repair. We see that The Empire cinema, which is at the center of the movie in which the story takes place, reflects the spirit of a period and has undergone years of restoration. This place was dragged into the chaos of inner turmoil, just as the fragile souls it contained were dragged. However, when we enter this building, which reflects Art Deco architecture, we see that symbolic motifs are given great importance and meaning by the director. In particular, we see that the carpet in the lobby of The Empire cinema is a nod to the Hicks’ Hexagon carpet (known as the hexagon of the famous British interior designer David Hicks) of the Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick‘s 1980 horror classic The Shining. The main character of The Shining, Jack Torrance (like the main character Hilary of Empire of Light) was a personality that was slowly drifting into madness.

IMPORTANCE OF SYMBOLS

Another important detail is the chair Hilary sits on in the dining room. When we look carefully, we understand that this chair, which seems ordinary at first glance, is not a simple item, but a Cesca Chair. Cesca Chair, designed by the famous Hungarian architect and designer Marcel Breuer in 1928, reflects an important radical design thought in interior architecture with its simple but extraordinary design, Modern and Midcentury style inspired by the principles of the Bauhaus and the designer’s revolutionary innovations in materials. Oscar-winning Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, who has shown great care in the design and set decoration of his films, showed us his main character (in the scene where he wrote a letter to his estranged daughter) while sitting in this chair in the 2016 film Julieta.

THE EMPIRE CINEMA

The Empire cinema was shot at the Dreamland Cinema in Margate, in the Thanet region of Kent County, England. Built on the site of the 1923 900-seat Dreamland Variety Theatre, this cinema was adjacent to the massive Dreamland Amusement Park on Marine Terrace on the Sea front. After filming, in March 2022, planning permission was granted to remove the original “Dreamland” signage from the exterior of the building to be temporarily renamed “Empire”. Director Sam Mendes cites the rich cultural history of the city of Margate as his reason for choosing to shoot there. In this city, where the British painter J. M. W. Turner painted some of his most famous works, T. S. Eliot, the most important poet and playwright of the twentieth century, penned his masterpiece The Waste Land here. In the movie, too, the character Hilary is seen helping Norman solve a puzzle by quoting from this book. Also in the same place where T.S. Eliot wrote The Waste Land, sitting in a bunker next to the movie theater and staring at the seashore, we see the character Stephen use the same bunker to sit and reflect on his relationship with Hilary.

Başrol oyuncusu Olivia Colman, 80. Altın Küre Ödülleri‘nde bu filmle En İyi Kadın Oyuncu – Drama dalında aday oldu ve ayrıca film de, 95. Akademi Ödülleri‘nde En İyi Sinematografi dalında Oscar ödülü adayı. 76. İngiliz Akademi Film Ödülleri’ne de 3 dalda BAFTA adayı olan filmin alt metninde, Irkçılık yani Irk Ayrımcılığı ve Cinsel istismar meseleleri yer alıyor. Bir başka önemli detay ise, Hilary karakterinin yemek salonunda oturduğu sandalye. İlk bakışta sıradan gelen bu sandalyenin dikkatli bakınca, basit bir eşya olmadığı bir Cesca Sandalyesi olduğunu anlıyoruz. THE EMPIRE SİNEMASI

The Scandinavian-made dark series Copenhagen Cowboy has taken its place among Netflix‘s impressive and mysterious productions with its strong cinematography and extraordinary subject matter. Created by film producer Sara Isabella Jønsson Vedde, and Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, known for productions such as Drive, Neon Demon, and Valhalla Rising, this series focuses on a feminine anti-hero blending neo-noir and crime. This mysterious character named Miu, who has supernatural powers, (was sold to bring luck to people throughout her life); is Dragged from a brothel run by an Albanian gangster to a restaurant that serves as a front for the Chinese mafia, she comes to terms with the dark and dangerous gangs of the criminal underworld.

The character of Miu, brings luck to people; In fact, as we step into the corrupt places of the underworld, we see that the life energy of those around them is consumed and they act as a kind of mechanism that fulfills justice. This character, who hardly speaks and remains calm in all circumstances, draws the profile of a mythological Goddess of Destiny. We see that every time he enters people’s lives, he actually determines their destiny. “TÁR”, THE DARK SPIRIT OF GENIUS

AN IMPRESSIVE PSYCHOLOGICAL-DRAMA

Written and directed by American filmmaker Todd Field, Tár is nominated for 6 Oscars at the 95th Academy Awards and is one of the favorite productions of the award season. Cate Blanchett, the lead actress who gave life to the character of Lydia Tár, a German classical music genius and the first female conductor of the orchestra, for her performance in this film, she won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress at the 76th British Academy Film Awards and embraced the Best Actress Award at the 80th Golden Globe Awards. At the center of the film, we see a strong female figure in the male-dominated world, a leading feminist figure in the advancement of women in the world of classical music. Representing a certain generation, this character is a part of the women’s rights movement, also called the women’s liberation movement, It symbolizes the Second Wave of the Feminist Movement. This movement encompasses a period of feminist activity in the West (mainly in the USA) beginning in the early 1960s and continuing until the late 1970s. The problems it deals with are; first-wave feminism was a variety of issues such as equality, legal inequalities, sexuality, family, workplace, and reproductive rights. There is already a struggle in the birth of feminism.

AMERICAN FEMINISM

Famous American author Rebecca Solnit, who has written articles on various subjects such as feminism, the environment, politics, and art, looks at the basic issues of women from a broad perspective and deals with the social dynamics that are imposed on women in her book titled “The Mother of All Questions”. Rebecca Solnit; “American feminism emerged from the abolitionist struggle, it was born at this juncture, sort of.” she touches on the origins of American feminism in her book. In the movie, we see that a character with a high ego, whose rise and fall are shown, struggles within the framework of the same problems as in the twentieth century. Thus, we see that there is a struggle at the center of the film.

GENIUS OR CRAZY?

The (fictional) character of Lydia Tár, the conductor of the world-famous Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, actually symbolizes an uncontrolled personality between genius and madness. In addition, the judgment of taste has an important quality in terms of the character in the film. So much so that it has a great role in communal and social communication in terms of character. Italian art philosopher Benedetto Croce, one of the most important figures in the history of aesthetics, is considered one of the most important Italian thinkers of the first half of the twentieth century. In his masterpiece Aesthetic as Science of Expression and General Linguistic, which left its mark on European philosophy, he deeply influenced the understanding of the art of the period, as well as the understanding of the philosophy of history and language. Croce; “The judging activity is called gusto, and the activity that produces it is called genius (geius). Genius and like are consequently the same in substance.” In his book, he refers to the similarity of Like and Genius. The character of Lydia Tár goes through fluctuating mental processes such as internal conflicts and Mood Disorders throughout the film.
