SAM MENDES’TEN ROMANTİK BİR DRAM “IŞIK İMPARATORLUĞU (EMPIRE OF LIGHT)”

 BİR DÖNEMİN RUHU

Oscar adaylığı bulunan İngiliz sinema ve tiyatro yönetmeni Sam Mendes’in ilk solo senaryosu ve yönetmen olarak dokuzuncu filmi olan Empire of Light, 1980’lerin İngiltere’sinde (Güney Sahili’nde) yaşanan romantik bir dram hikayesi anlatıyor. Başrol oyuncusu Olivia Colman, 80. Altın Küre Ödülleri‘nde bu filmle En İyi Kadın Oyuncu – Drama dalında aday oldu ve ayrıca film de, 95. Akademi Ödülleri‘nde En İyi Sinematografi dalında Oscar ödülü adayı. 76. İngiliz Akademi Film Ödülleri’ne de 3 dalda BAFTA adayı olan filmin alt metninde, Irkçılık yani Irk Ayrımcılığı ve Cinsel istismar meseleleri yer alıyor. Yapım Tasarımcısı Mark Tildesley, ana karakterlerin yıpranmış ve kırılmış insanlar olduklarını ve bakıma, iyileşmeye ve onarılmaya ihtiyaçları bulunduğunu aktarıyor. Hikayenin geçtiği filmin merkezindeki The Empire sinemasının da, bir dönemin ruhunu yansıttığını ve yıllarca restorasyondan geçmiş olduğunu görüyoruz. Burası da içerisinde barındırdığı kırılgan ruhların sürüklendiği gibi, içsel kargaşanın kaosuna sürüklenmiş durumda. Bununla birlikte Art Deco mimarisini yansıtan bu yapının içerisine girdiğimizde, yönetmen tarafından simgesel motiflere büyük bir önem ve anlam verildiği görmekteyiz. Özellikle The Empire sinemasının lobisindeki halının, Stanley Kubrick’in 1980 yapımı korku klasiği The Shining’deki Overlook Hotel’in (ünlü İngiliz iç mimar David Hicks’in altıgeni olarak bilinen) Hicks’ Hexagon halısına bir selam olduğunu görüyoruz. The Shining’in ana karakteri Jack Torrance’da (Empire of Light’ın ana karakteri Hilary gibi) yavaş yavaş deliliğe sürüklenen bir kişilikti.

SEMBOLLERİN ÖNEMİ

Bir başka önemli detay ise, Hilary karakterinin yemek salonunda oturduğu sandalye. İlk bakışta sıradan gelen bu sandalyenin dikkatli bakınca, basit bir eşya olmadığı bir Cesca Sandalyesi olduğunu anlıyoruz. Ünlü Macar mimar ve tasarımcı Marcel Breuer tarafından 1928 yılında tasarlanan Cesca Sandalye, Bauhaus‘un ilkelerinden ve tasarımcının malzemedeki devrim niteliğindeki yeniliklerinden ilham alan basit ama olağanüstü tasarım, Modern ve Midcentury tarzıyla iç mimaride önemli bir radikal tasarım düşüncesini yansıtır. Filmlerinin tasarımı ve set dekorasyonu konusunda büyük bir titizlik örneği sergileyen Oscar ödüllü İspanyol yönetmen Pedro Almodóvar da, 2016 yapımı Julieta filminde ana karakterini (görüşmediği kızına mektup yazdığı sahnede) bu sandalyede otururken bizlere göstermişti.

FİLMİN KONUSU

1980’lerde İngiltere’nin Güney Sahili’ndeki kasabasında geçen film, çalkantılı zamanlarda insan ilişkilerinin gücünü ve eski bir sinemanın içinde ve çevresinde geçen dramatik bir aşk hikayesini anlatıyor.

Oyuncu kadrosunda; Olivia Colman, Micheal Ward, Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Tom Brooke, Tanya Moodie, Hannah Onslow, Crystal Clarke, Monica Dolan, Ron Cook, Sara Stewart, Roman Hayeck-Gree, Justin Edwards ve Brian Fletcher yer alıyor.

THE EMPIRE SİNEMASI

The Empire sineması, İngiltere’de Kent Kontluğu‘na bağlı Thanet bölgesinde ve Margate kentindeki Dreamland Sineması’nda çekildi. 1923 tarihli 900 kişilik Dreamland Varyete Tiyatrosu‘nun yerine inşa edilen bu sinema, Deniz cephesinde bulunan Marine Terrace ‘taki devasa Dreamland Eğlence Parkı‘nın bitişiğindeydi. Çekimlerden sonra Mart 2022’de, geçici olarak “Empire” adıyla değiştirilmesi için orijinal “Dreamland” tabelasının binanın dışından kaldırılması için planlama izni verildi. Yönetmen Sam Mendes, orada çekim yapmayı seçmesinin nedeni olarak Margate kentinin zengin kültürel tarihini gösteriyor. İngiliz ressam J. M. W. Turner’ın en ünlü eserlerinden bazılarını resmettiği bu kentte, yirminci yüzyılın en önemli şair ve oyun yazarı T. S. Eliot, başyapıtı ‘Çorak Topraklar’ eserini burada kaleme aldı. Filmde de, Hilary karakterinin, bu kitaptan kitabından alıntı yaparak Norman’ın bir bulmacayı çözmesine yardım ettiğini görülüyor. Ayrıca T.S Eliot’ın, Çorak Topraklar’ı yazdığı, sinemanın yanındaki bir sığınağa oturduğu ve deniz kıyısına baktığı aynı yer de, Stephen karakterinin oturup Hilary ile olan ilişkisi üzerine düşünmek için aynı sığınağı kullandığını görüyoruz.

The Scandinavian-made dark series Copenhagen Cowboy has taken its place among Netflix‘s impressive and mysterious productions with its strong cinematography and extraordinary subject matter. Created by film producer Sara Isabella Jønsson Vedde, and Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, known for productions such as Drive, Neon Demon, and Valhalla Rising, this series focuses on a feminine anti-hero blending neo-noir and crime. This mysterious character named Miu, who has supernatural powers, (was sold to bring luck to people throughout her life); is Dragged from a brothel run by an Albanian gangster to a restaurant that serves as a front for the Chinese mafia, she comes to terms with the dark and dangerous gangs of the criminal underworld.

The character of Miu, brings luck to people; In fact, as we step into the corrupt places of the underworld, we see that the life energy of those around them is consumed and they act as a kind of mechanism that fulfills justice. This character, who hardly speaks and remains calm in all circumstances, draws the profile of a mythological Goddess of Destiny. We see that every time he enters people’s lives, he actually determines their destiny. AN IMPRESSIVE PSYCHOLOGICAL-DRAMA

Written and directed by American filmmaker Todd Field, Tár is nominated for 6 Oscars at the 95th Academy Awards and is one of the favorite productions of the award season. Cate Blanchett, the lead actress who gave life to the character of Lydia Tár, a German classical music genius and the first female conductor of the orchestra, for her performance in this film, she won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress at the 76th British Academy Film Awards and embraced the Best Actress Award at the 80th Golden Globe Awards. At the center of the film, we see a strong female figure in the male-dominated world, a leading feminist figure in the advancement of women in the world of classical music. Representing a certain generation, this character is a part of the women’s rights movement, also called the women’s liberation movement, It symbolizes the Second Wave of the Feminist Movement. This movement encompasses a period of feminist activity in the West (mainly in the USA) beginning in the early 1960s and continuing until the late 1970s. The problems it deals with are; first-wave feminism was a variety of issues such as equality, legal inequalities, sexuality, family, workplace, and reproductive rights. There is already a struggle in the birth of feminism.

AMERICAN FEMINISM

Famous American author Rebecca Solnit, who has written articles on various subjects such as feminism, the environment, politics, and art, looks at the basic issues of women from a broad perspective and deals with the social dynamics that are imposed on women in her book titled “The Mother of All Questions”. Rebecca Solnit; “American feminism emerged from the abolitionist struggle, it was born at this juncture, sort of.” she touches on the origins of American feminism in her book. In the movie, we see that a character with a high ego, whose rise and fall are shown, struggles within the framework of the same problems as in the twentieth century. Thus, we see that there is a struggle at the center of the film.

GENIUS OR CRAZY?

The (fictional) character of Lydia Tár, the conductor of the world-famous Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, actually symbolizes an uncontrolled personality between genius and madness. In addition, the judgment of taste has an important quality in terms of the character in the film. So much so that it has a great role in communal and social communication in terms of character. Italian art philosopher Benedetto Croce, one of the most important figures in the history of aesthetics, is considered one of the most important Italian thinkers of the first half of the twentieth century. In his masterpiece Aesthetic as Science of Expression and General Linguistic, which left its mark on European philosophy, he deeply influenced the understanding of the art of the period, as well as the understanding of the philosophy of history and language. “THE WHALE” A FASCINATING DRAMA BY DARREN ARONOFSKY

 

A MASSIVE PERFORMANCE IN A SINGLE PLACE

The film, which made its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival and received a six-minute standing ovation for its lead actor, Brendan Fraser, was nominated for three Oscars at the 95th Academy Awards. The film, which received 4 BAFTA nominations at the 76th British Academy Film Awards and nominations for the Best Actor Award at the 80th Golden Globe Awards, is considered one of the favorite films of the award season. The Whale, directed by Oscar and BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Darren Aronofsky; It is adapted from the American playwright Samuel D. Hunter‘s play of the same name, which won the 2013 Drama Desk Award and the 2013 Lucille Lortel Outstanding Play Award. The film is about a morbidly obese, reclusive English teacher who teaches online writing classes as she tries to reconnect with her teenage daughter. ARONOFSKY CINEMA AND ANATOMY OF UGLINESS

Darren Aronofsky’s cinema adopts a narrative ornamented with religious motifs and mythological allegories. Again in this movie, we encounter similar images. A missionary named Thomas is seen trying to show the spiritual light to the character of Charlie, and on the other hand, Charlie, Hz. He paints an image of Christ the redeemer, symbolizing the suffering and suffering of Jesus. Italian scientist and philosopher Umberto Eco, one of the great masters of medieval aesthetics and semiotics, he is considered one of the most important thinkers of the 20th century. Eco’s On Ugliness is an important philosophical study of the history of evil and ugliness. (Eco here), in one chapter of the Book of Isaiah (53: 2-7); He states that because of Christ’s suffering, he was shown “deprived of form and beauty.” The character of Charlie in the movie also seems to symbolize this. The ancient Greek philosopher Plato argues that the reality we perceive with our senses is actually an inadequate imitation of the perfection of the world of ideas. When we look at the scholastic philosophy, we see that the concept of ugliness is valid within the framework of the holistic beauty of the universe, and we see that it presents various examples. Also regarded as one of the greatest Christian thinkers of all time, the Latin philosopher St. Augustine, in his work On Order; states that ugliness contributes to order.

THE MORPHOLOGY OF BEAUTY

In fact, we see that Charlie’s main struggle is more with life and human relations, rather than his weight. In addition to his external flaws, Charlie (who tries to correct his past mistakes) has a character that contains goodness and beauty. This explains to us that the concept of beauty in Aronofsky’s cinema sits in a different place from the stereotypical views. Famous thinker and scientist Umberto Eco embarks on a great historical and philosophical expedition on beauty in his book, The History of Beauty. Eco said, “During the Renaissance, the so-called ‘Great Theory’, which maintained that beauty depended on the ratio of the parts from which it was composed, attained a high level of perfection.” He says that in the Renaissance Period, new forms of expression emerged to express beauty. It is seen that the forms of perfection and perfection in beauty have been within the framework of a different taste since this period. However, Aronofsky; In the film, moves away from today’s taste and offers us a different interpretation.

Because of his character’s severe weight, Brendan Fraser had to don a heavy prosthetic suit for the role that he wore for hours. He told members of the media in attendance at the Venice International Film Festival (via Variety), “I developed muscles I did not know I had. I even felt a sense of vertigo at the end of the day when all the appliances were removed; it was like stepping off the dock onto a boat in Venice. That [sense of] was undulating. It gave me an appreciation for those whose bodies are similar. You need to be an incredibly strong person, mentally and physically, to inhabit that physical being.”

Shot in a 1.33 aspect ratio, giving us a confined, boxy atmosphere that mirrors the confines of Charlie’s apartment.

With the exception of the opening scene where Thomas gets off the bus and the flashback scene on the beach, the entire movie takes place at Charlie’s apartment.

For the role, Fraser spent four hours each day being fitted with prosthetics that weighed up to 300 lb (136 kg). He also consulted with the Obesity Action Coalition and worked with a dance instructor for months before filming began in order to determine how his character would move with the excess weight.

Multiples of 12 are a recurring theme in the film. Charlie says he has $120,000 saved up (12 times 10,000). The amount of money Thomas stole is $2,436 (12 times 203). Finally, when Charlie summarizes the beliefs of the New Life church, he says that 144,000 people are supposed to be saved when the rapture comes. This number is 12 times 12,000 and is mentioned in the Book of Revelation as the number of people obtained by gathering 12,000 people from each of the 12 tribes of the sons of Israel. (Darren Aronofsky’s first film, Pi, also involved connections between mathematics and religious beliefs.)
